On 27th January, 1915, the 2nd East Lancashire battalion of 24 Brigade, 8th Division, left their billets in Red Barn and moved into trenches in Fleurbaix where they remained until relieved on 30th January. On 30th January, the day on which Robert Highgate was killed, the battalion diary recorded that there were a few casualties sustained as a result of shell fire hitting the right of the line in the afternoon. |
